Two interviews this week with my friends and colleagues from the 1990s.  Al Montag came to Hofstra specifically for the radio station and he blew us all away with his talent.  Mark Giordano never went to Hofstra but he joined the station and charmed us all with his laugh and his voice. 

Jon Lane came to WRHU in the early 1990s and made himself a key member of the Hofstra Radio Sports Team, as well as producing the Rock n Roll Oasis.

In the mid 1990s Ray Calderon showed up at WRHU, somewhat out of the blue, and quickly made himself a key member of the Hofstra Radio Commmunity.  Ray is a great storyteller and we had a great time recalling our first meeting and how that changed Ray's Hofstra experience.

Kristi Jasberg Robinson talks about her time at Hofstra Radio in the mid 1990s starting as the Traffic Reporter (who knew?) and working her way up to Program Director.

In this interview Will Shelley talks about his early days at Hofstra Radio in the mid 1990s.  Will was also one of the key members of the station as the facilities moved from Memorial Hall to Dempster Hall.

More than 50 interviews have been recorded for this project.  In this short episode I run down the list of folks I've spoken with and I tease the next interviews, with Dawn McCarthy and Will Shelley.

Dawn McCarthy walked into Hofstra Radio as a freshman in Fall 1992.  She grew up around the corner from Hofstra University and Jeff Kraus and was immediately part of the Hofstra Radio community.  Dawn was also part of the transition from Memorial Hall to the new facility in Dempster Hall.

Bruce Avery joined Hofstra Radio as the new General Manager in 1994.  It's been a long and amazing journey for Bruce and the station over the last 28 years.  In this conversation we talk about Bruce being the "new guy" all those years ago and about how he got into radio in the first place.

Marilyn Armstrong discusses her early days at WVHC in the early 1960s and how Hofstra Radio became an enduring part of her life, even after her undergraduate days were over.

In this episode I briefly talk about the retirement of Bruce Avery, who plans to step down as WRHU General Manager in August of 2020.  We hope to have his interview available soon.  And we wish happy birthdays to Marilyn Armstrong and to Jeff Raspe.  This week, Marilyn tells her own story of her days at WVHC.

Tom Curley is like a force of nature.  From the moment we started talking - and before we began recording - he had so many great stories and so much energy.  Tom was a major part of Hofstra Radio, WVHC, in the early 70s and continued to contribute to the station for many years afterwards.

Garry Armstrong was a mainstay during the early days of Hofstra Radio when it was WVHC, under the Little Theater.  Marilyn Armstrong joined the station a few years later as one of the few women on staff at the station.  Together they recall the early days of Hofstra Radio and Hofstra College, before there were dorms on campus and before it was a University.

This is the 30th Anniversary Invitation Tape that Jeff and company produced in 1989 presenting the history of Hofstra Radio in a series of soundbites and clips.  There are many familiar names and voices on this tape and you'll probably miss some of them on the first listen.  I can't imagine the time and effort that went into making this extraordinary tape.  It's a great listen and a great lesson on the history of Hofstra Radio.

For the 30th anniversary of Hofstra Radio, Jeff Kraus and Sue Zizza put together a tape of voices and events telling the history of the radio station.  There are many familiar voices and names in this tape and it goes by so fast!  Considering the technology of the time it must have been a tremendous undertaking to produce this tape.  Tom Curley, who recently found the cassette copy, and I take a few moments to talk about the tape.
